Chet Porter Interview
Known for his bright aesthetics, nature-influenced sonic engineering, and lighthearted melodies, Chet Porter is an up and coming artist being praised for his intriguing sounds. Be sure to catch his set at Euphoria Friday, April 7th, and get more acquainted with him in our exclusive interview!
1. How did you get started in the music industry?
in high school i played guitar in a couple of different bands. we got offered a record deal from warner canada but there were a lot of weird vibes there so we decided to just break up the band to get out of it. then i was like, "now what?" so i took my dad's old laptop and torrented fruity loops and started messing around. that laptop eventually got stolen out of my car and i had to start all over. after a bunch of years and switching DAWs i sort of figured out what i was doing and started to release little remixes and songs, and now i'm here i guess!
2. What was the inspiration for your latest track, “Stay?”
chelsea actually came up with the initial idea and asked me to write around it. she's brilliant. i produced it in dubai in this small bedroom in the middle of the desert haha so everything was really sandy and sunny, but synesthesia was making me see the colour blue, so i just rolled with that and tried to make it feel even more like that colour. lush, twinkly, lots of reverb on certain things, etc. all in all we just wanted to make a good song.
3. Have you played The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild yet?!
hahaha i literally haven't bought it yet just because i know it will take over my life. if i had it, i'd never finish my project. i want to make sure i'm done that before i buy the game. so excited though.
4. How do you create some of the unique melodies on your tracks?
i wish i had more to say about this, but melodies sort of just pour out of me, i don't really think about it. i usually just write like 10 or however many melodies until i find the right one for the song.
5. What has been the most memorable moment (so far) in your music career?
the most memorable moments are the ones where i realize i'm hanging with a bunch of my close friends in different cities all over the world. like i just saw so many friends at BUKU in new orleans, and i'm going to see so many in austin at SXSW. sometimes it just hits me that we all get to be here together because of what we did with music.
6. What do you think about the future; an amalgamation of technology, music, and art, and how do you fit into it?
i'm not sure what the future will be like, but if the world starts to end or singularity happens or something, i trust elon musk will fix it. the future of music on the other hand, i have no idea where it will go, and that's what's so cool about it. new sounds come all the time. in regards to myself and how i fit into it, i have no idea about that either. i'm working on a lot of fun sounding stuff. let's just hope people don't forget about me haha.
7. What can fans expect from your performance at Euphoria 2017?
to have fun! i play a lot of my own music/edits, very multi-genre. there's low energy moments and high energy moments. i'll be playing keys and drum pads and mixing too, so it still flows like a DJ set.
